3,200 patients' PHI stolen, posted online in ransomware attack on Texas medical provider

Lewisville, Texas-based Hoya Optical Labs of America is notifying 3,259 patients that their protected health information has been stolen and posted online in a ransomware attack.

On April 5, the Texas provider discovered that files on some of its servers had been encrypted in a ransomware attack. It quickly hired an outside law firm and forensic experts to investigate the scope of the attack, according tonotification lettersmailed to affected patients.

On April 23, the investigation uncovered the hackers had published the information online that they claimed to have stolen. The Texas company expanded its investigation team to collect and review the data published by attackers.

The investigation is ongoing, but it has uncovered that patients' names, addresses, Social Security numbers and financial information were leaked in the attack.

In response to the attack, the Texas provider is enhancing its security system, governance practices and ongoing monitoring to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future.
